Long Beach is part of
the Pacific Rim National Park which has grown into a popular tourist destination
surrounded by the communities of Tofino and Ucluelet both of which have
accommodations such as oceanfront resorts, hotels, motels and lodges, and bed
and breakfast homes. There are many excellent restaurants, pubs and cafes in the
area. You can also enjoy browsing in local stores and gift shops featuring local
crafts. The area is renown for whale watching as Pacific Gray Whales pass
through the area in the spring and fall.
The west side of the peninsula is dominated by surf and wide sandy beaches and
the east side by rainforest. Clayoquot Sound is north of Tofino and is full of
beaches, islands and rainforests.
Three significant features dominate the Pacific Rim National Park. Long beach
features spectacular sandy beaches.
The Broken Group features an island archipelago with spectacular scenery and
abounds with recreational opportunities. The Broken Group Island area of Pacific
Rim Park is situated south of Ucluelet in the entrance to Barclay Sound.
Renowned for its salt water fishing, ocean kayaking and scuba diving, the area
is rich in marine life, sandy beaches, tucked away coves and incredible scenery.
The Broken Group is accessible only by boat. Guided tours are available from
Tofino, Ucluelet and Long Beach.
The West Coast Trail starts at Long Beach on the south side of the Broken Group
and is a world renown hiking trail. The world-famous West Coast Trail gives
hikers the opportunity to experience pure wilderness in a hike that takes
between 5 to 7 days. The trail is 77 km (48 miles) long. Trail permits are
required. The trail goes from Long Beach to Port Renfrew and transportation to
and from either end is available.
The area is
abundant with a great diversity of of birds, fish, reptiles, and mammals. There
are also a number of important Nuu-chah-nulth archeological sites in this area.
Long Beach is
approximately 3 hours minutes (195 km) from Nanaimo. Long Beach is on the
West Side of a narrow peninsula jutting into the deep blue Pacific Ocean.
Next stop Japan. Long Beach is situated in an area of breath-taking beauty.
It is one of the very best places to visit on Vancouver Island.
