Unmasking Cancer

Joanne Hatherly, Times Colonist

Published: Tuesday, September 19, 2006

The merchants at Mattick's Farm are putting on "Putting on a Brave Face."

That wasn't a typo. "Putting on a Brave Face" is a charity dinner and silent auction that will raise funds to fight breast cancer.

Last year, the group challenged Victorians to come up with home-crafted purses made of brassieres. That event raised $10,000 for the B.C. Cancer Foundation, which in turn purchased two portable ambulatory pumps that enabled breast cancer patients to do chemotherapy at home.

This year, event organizers are asking the public to make masks to be sold at the fundraiser.

"The idea came from one of the people at last year's fundraiser," said Connie Smith, events coordinator for Mattick's Farm.

This year's funds will be donated to cancer research.

The masks can be made in any size, fashion or material.

Smith says several masks are already made and will be on display at Mattick's Farm stores starting Friday, Oct. 6.

To participate in mask-making: Pick up an entry form along with detailed information at any Mattick's Farm shop.
